More Food Memories

-Other Candies-Velamints, Smarties, Spree, SweeTarts, Jolly Ranchers, Charms, Pez (Grandma- at –the- Farm got us the dispensers for Christmas), Starburst, UFOs (We’d get these with Jessica and Cindy in the late 70s), candy corn, Tootsie Rolls (and Pops), caramels, candy cigarettes, Life Savers (my fav flavor was Butter Rum), and tic tac (We’d sometimes pretend they were pills or vitamins).

-Cracker Jacks - We liked the prizes in the box even though they were cheesy.

-Entenmanns – We love their donuts, éclairs and chocolate chip cookies.

-We liked having Pillsbury biscuits as a special breakfast treat.

-Mrs. K made me a liverwurst with onions and mayo on rye sandwich once. Her granddaughters Cindy and Jessica, Mike, and I also liked having cranberry juice mixed with 7 -Up at her house.

-Mr. K gave us a horseradish from his garden. Mom used this to mix with the beets for our Easter meal. It was very strong. Our other neighbor Mr. R used to give us tomatoes. Once we got a giant zucchini from Ken and Tammy who gave us a recipe for this since we had never had it before.

We had a vegetable garden with cucumbers, tomatoes, and radishes in our yard 2 or 3 times. I think that one year we had corn in it too.

Note- All photos except for the last one of the fruit and vegetable collage are from the internet

Owl Stuff

My grandmother collected owl items. The first is a bank, but it doesn't have a way to get the money out on the bottom like most do. The second is a cute set of salt and pepper shakers. The knick-knack from Tennessee is one that we bought her in 1983- we traveled through that state on the way home from Florida. We went to The Forbidden Caverns there. The owl spoon rest is from Grandma's trip to California in the late 1970s. About 20 years ago, I started getting into owls a bit and have some T-shirts and jewelry of them- I will be posting those next time.

Tree- Then and Now

This is the tree in our back yard as it was around Christmas time of 1993 and presently- last month. My mother had cut some of the branches off of the bottom in the late 90s and recently my brother cut off some more.

Even More Toys and Childhood Fun- Part 2

Our Mom’s friend Helen J. gave us some of her son’s old toys, including a couple of car racing tracks; one set was light blue and the other was orange. My brother had a black and silver set too but this was made of a rubbery type material, not hard plastic.

Grandma-at-the-Farm got us the kid’s edition of Trivial Pursuit one Christmas. I was not that great at the regular one; entertainment was my best category. We also have a few other editions and the M*A*S*H trivia game.

I have been looking at photos of toys and other retro 1970s and 1980s stuff on the internet lately. This has been fun. It is also reminding me of items that I had not really thought much about for a long time, like our neighbor’s croquet set. We played this a couple of times with their grandkids, Cindy and Jessica. I am sure that we weren’t really following the official rules though.

Some people might think that such reminiscing is kind of foolish. It is nice that Sharon and I enjoy sharing our childhood memories. I sent her one of my Toys and Childhood Fun photo documents which she liked a lot. She wishes that she still had many of her toys and other things or even just photos of them. I feel the same way about this.

The only photo from the internet is the race cars and tracks.
