More Summer 1975

My brother and I goofing off, playing dress-up- weird that we were wearing such items on a hot day though. The air conditioner must have been on! The blanket, scarf, hat, and whatever is on my head were handmade by Mom.

Summertime 1975

I looked closer at one of these photos recently and noticed that I am holding 2 small American flags so this summer family party must be a 4th of July one

The last photo is of Mark and me with our uncle and his girlfriend. I am holding one of my Raggedy Ann dolls. I still have them. My brother has the Raggedy Andy ones.

October 30, 2015- Halloween/Earliest Memories

I don’t really like Halloween that much anymore but I do have some good memories of this holiday. The best one was in 1976 when I was an angel, my costume of choice 3 times, and he was a fireman with the” Emergency!”  helmet and megaphone thing. That was our favorite show then.

I can’t believe that he remembered that I had a little crush on Gage. Wait, yes I can- his memory is perfect when it comes to my crushes, unfortunately. Yikes, I’m so ashamed about this. He had mentioned that fact a few weeks ago after he watched an episode of it.

I did watch one with him about 6 weeks ago but it just doesn’t interest me anymore which is how I feel about a lot of the shows that I liked when I was a kid, esp. many of the comedies which seem so lame to me now.

I’m thinking about one that used to scare us a little – “In Search of”, hosted by Leonard Nimoy- esp. the episodes with Big Foot, the Loch Ness Monster and UFOs. I ‘m sure if we watched this now we’d think it was so cheesy. “Day of Disaster” was another- the Hindenburg and a bridge that was shaking a lot because of high winds in the northwest somewhere were on this. Joel Siegel was the host.

I am pretty sure that my brother won the second place ribbon for his cowboy costume in a town contest.  Mine was lame; I was in pajamas, a robe and had curlers in my hair. The last time that we went trick or treating was 1982- I was a gypsy/fortune teller.

We had some great decorations and still have a few of them, like the haunted house which is actually a greeting card. I like the ceramic one of these and Dracula stuffed bear that we got in the late 80s.

I have a hazy memory of a couple of Girl Scout parties- at one we were bobbing for apples and the other was at camp and I had a ghost costume which didn’t seem very original compared my troop mates.

Mom and Dad carved a pumpkin only once; it was too messy and not worth the time and effort to do so again. We would just draw faces on them with markers. I always worried that someone would smash the ones that we’d put on the porch.

I remember the spooky house with the coffin that Dracula came out of one year when we went trick-or-treating. That really scared Mike and me.

I did a Halloween post at Blogger last year and used a few pictures from the 1970s. I was Raggedy Ann and Mike was a devil, but I really don’t remember this. I think that I was 4 years old.  I don’t know if people can actually remember much of anything from before this age. Mike agrees with me.

My two earliest memories are traumatic ones, naturally. Dad accidentally burned me with his cigarette when he was carrying me through the cemetery, probably in 1973 or 1974. Mike and I saw our parent’s Chevy Malibu being totaled out in front of Aunt Rachel’s house in 1975.

A lady was trying to avoid a drunken guy crossing the road and she slammed her car into ours which also got pushed into a telephone pole. We had been having such a good time in our aunt’s yard before this. I was crying.  I have the newspaper article about this in my scrapbook.

Halloween 1975

I was an angel for Halloween 3 times, including the very next year. Mom made my costumes. I loved our decorations, especially the card which we still have. It's in the pictures - on top of the TV to the right. The last time that we went trick or treating was either 1981 or 1982. I was a gypsy then.

Summertime 1975

These are some of my favourite photos and memories of the 1970s. Summertime was always so much fun. I love the one of my brother sleeping with his racecar. We were goofing off and playing dressup one day - kind of strange to be wearing such things on a hot day. The photo on the bottom right is of Mom who is standing by our swingset, Aunt Dorothy, cousin Sal, Grandma, my brother and I.

Kindergarten Graduation - 1975

I don't remember my kindergarten graduation, actually, but I do still have these pictures and my diploma in my scrapbooks and the white tassle. I only have a couple of vivid memories from kindergarten. One was that we had show and tell day sometimes and also that we made Christmas ornaments - I still have mine. I wanted to play with a doll one day but Michelle wouldn't let me which was upsetting. Today I received a letter from my grade school looking for donations. I can't afford to be giving them anything. They are also having a get together in October for the 60th anniversary of St. John's School. I'm not into reunions so I won't be going. I must say that I do have better memories of this school than I do of high school. Some of my dreams take place there, like concerts of Duran Duran in the school gym/ auditorium.

Easter 1975

The first photo is of my brother, Uncle Mike, Suzy and I from around Eastertime. We would only get to see our friends Suzy and Jenny from Pennsylvania 3 or 4 times a year when they visited their grandparents who were our neighbors. Easter egg dyeing with that Paas kit was so much fun. My favorite color egg to make was always purple. I'm wearing one of my favourite childhood dresses. It's so cool that we were both wearing hats that year. I haven't worn a dressy hat since that decade, I think. Well, maybe once or twice in the 80's. We are with Grandma in her apartment which is right next door to ours and with Dad on our front steps. These are the only 4 photos we have from that year, I wish that they had taken one of us with mom too.

My brother and I - 1975

Two photos of us in front of the cool TV/ stereo cabinet. I'm in my St. John's uniform, first day of school of first grade. We are in our cave made from braches of the tree that got cut down in our yard. I'm wearing my Bullwinkle sweatshirt and have my Theresa doll in there with us. We loved playing in the leaves in the fall. Mom would rake them into low piles making a leaf house for us sometimes.

Summertime 1975

It's been kind of a stressful day. My brother is in complaint mode as he often is. He is the angry middle age man. It has put me in a bad mood so I have traveled to my past to happier times that my brother and I had. Things were so carefree and simple back then. I love these black and white photos that dad took of us playing in the yard. Our Uncle Al helped dad put up that swingset. I must've loved my Kathy doll - she's in all the pictures.
