I received The Velveteen Rabbit as a Christmas gift in either 1977 or 1978 and absolutely loved it. I always pictured my stuffed animals as being real and like my friends and most of them I gave names and personalities so this book really meant alot to me. I lost my original copy of it in the mid 1980s but luckily my mom found one that looked exactly the same.

Maybe I am weird, but The Velveteen Rabbit made me sad. I disliked the mother in the story immensely. I thought she was a bitch for wanting to throw away the bunny after the boy was sick - all she had to do was wash him! Even though he wasn't a real bunny yet it still bummed me out. Black Beauty is another sad story for me as an animal lover.
Oh my gosh, I think I read this book when I was little!!!!! I think I did! I think I did!!!!
I am amazed at how much antique stuff you are able to keep around with you!
I hope you are having a peaceful and happy day!

Pam - No, you are right, it was a pretty sad story. I'm sure that if I were to reread it now I would feel the same way as you. My memories are of liking it though. There are books, TV shows and movies that I also enjoyed back when I was a kid that I wonder why I ever liked. I never read Black Beauty but I think I'll stay away from it because I get so upset seeing sad stories about animals in the news and in the papers.
C- Thank you, I hope that your day has been a good one too. We used to have even more old stuff but I foolishly got rid of some of it. It has been fun going through our keepsake storage totes and sharing these things here.
